Artist's Description

It is said that there was a monkey in the town of Heidelberg as far back as the 15th century. The monkey was surrounded with mice, held a mirror in one hand and touched his backside with the other. He was mentioned in 1632 in a poem by Martin Zeiller. The original monkey was destroyed in a war between 1689-93. In 1979, a new monkey surrounded by mice was placed on the Old Bridge, with a copy of the poem next to it. It has a mirror in one hand and makes the sign to ward off the evil eye with its other hand. The monkeys head is a mask, you can actually put your head inside for a photograph. According to local legend, touch the mirror for wealth, the outstretched fingers to ensure that you return to Heidelberg, and the mice for fertility.

About Pamela Newcomb

Pamela Newcomb

Welcome to my gallery! I am the proud owner and creator of Pamorama Photography®, a Southern California photography business. I often combine photography with travel and outdoor activities. I seek to capture exceptional images of the world as I see it. I look for color, texture, and light as I photograph nature, architecture, sunsets, sunrises, seascapes, landscapes, events and more. I want my clients to experience my images with the feeling that they are present in the moment. I have created custom art by adjusting the detail, palette, and colors to suit decorating requests. I have had a lot of success with printing on metals and acrylic, and using light boxes. To consult about a custom version of one of my images, please send...
