Artist's Description
The Stone Bridge is a 12th-century bridge across the Danube in Regensburg, Germany. It replaced a wooden bridge built by Charlemagne near the present site. For centuries, it was the closest bridge across water to the west of Vienna, a distance of about 250 miles, which helped make Regensburg into a major trade center. Until the 1930s, it was the city's only bridge across the river. It served as a model for other stone bridges built in Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries, such as the London Bridge. The bridge was originally over 1,100 feet long. In 2008, it became restricted to pedestrian and bicycle use. The bridge has been under restoration since 2010 with completion not expected before 2017.
